Who are these Bengalis?
Bengalis are from the South Asian region, and are distinguished from other ethnic groups by their language and culture. Bangla is their language and is the mother tongue of around four hundred million people, making it the 4th largest major language group in the world. The term "Bengalis" is a broad umbrella which includes Muslims, Hindus, Christians, and Buddhists.
Demographic Report about the Bengali people in the United States:
There are more than 600,000 Bengalis living in the United States. The main concentration of Bengalis is in the New York and New Jersey area. In Massachusetts alone, there are around 10,000 Bengalis who have never heard the Gospel, despite the fact that there are many viable churches around them. These people are mainly from Bangladesh and the neighboring states of India, West Bengal, Assam and Tripura. The majority of Bengalis from Bangladesh are Muslims, while the Bengalis from India are mainly Hindu. There are a few associations of Bengali people in this area who meet together throughout the year for various cultural events. These present dynamics create a great challenge for reaching this unreached people group, the Bengali population in Massachusetts with the love of God.
What does the BENGALI MISSION do?
Networking, evangelism and church planting among the Bengali people in the greater Boston area.
How does it serve people?
Through participating in various cultural events and gatherings, visiting people in their homes, entertaining people, open discussions and distributing literature. Contributing Bengali Bibles to the Bengali language section of public libraries.
How can I get involved?
There are many ways to support this mission! Through committed prayer (individually or with core prayer groups. You may join with a small group which meets twice a month), financial support (for supporting workers and buying Bengali Bibles and literature) and time (investing in friendships with the Bengali people)!
